Working Girl

Monday, February 27, 2012

Today marks the last day for my internship with the meg editorial team at MEGA Publishing Group. I brought a camera to take pictures with the memorable people I have met in the office. Although the work can be tiring, physically and mentally at times, I really truly enjoyed my stay there.

the interns
I arrived in the office at 9:45am. Chelsea, a fellow intern, was already in the studio helping Sir Rain set-up the accessories for the shoot later that day. We sorted the accessories by brand and by type, and after that, went on to hanging and arranging the clothes. There was a lot to do that day, and a lot to follow-up. I called the Marketing contact for Topshop / Warehouse / Dorothy Perkins and emailed more pull-out requests. Chelsea and I did an inventory of the clothes used for the shoot and we were constantly arranging and looking for specific pieces while the fashion editor was styling. There were six models scheduled from 11am to 8pm. We had to assist them to make sure that the pictures would come out nice and pretty. I told myself I would leave at 6pm (end of office hours) but ended up staying a little past seven. Sir Rain kept telling me that I shouldn't leave yet, and I really didn't want to, but had to.  It was such a busy day, and I'm glad I was there to lend a hand.

I learned a lot from my OJT experience. It was my first time being in a completely different environment, and a professional one, at that. I am a naturally timid girl, but entering the fashion magazine industry made me grow into a more outgoing and independent person. Before, I could not even order food via delivery hotline because I hated talking to strangers on the phone. Now, I talk to marketing staff persons for pull-out requests, follow-ups, and other information I need for the magazine. Plus, I now know how to fax a document! Haha! It's kind of shallow, I know, but I remember the first time I was asked to fax a pull-out request, it took me 15 minutes to send one page (super fail). Not only that, I also gained a lot of insights about beauty and fashion. I was able to familiarize myself with a lot of brands and local designers. A friend even commented once that I dress in school better since I started my OJT at meg

But I believe that the best part of my internship was the people that I have met in MEGA. Everyone in the office was nice and friendly to me. Whenever I step in the 18th floor, despite being an hour late, I would always be greeted by the guard on duty. He would smile at me and let me sign in the logbook for interns. When I ask for the keys in the storage, or when I need directions to where I can find a certain department, he would sometimes leave his place to help me. The photographers, drivers, and other staff that I encounter often really have pleasing personalities because even though they don't know my name, they would make small talk or ask me questions about how I am doing.

I also met Chelsea, who I mentioned earlier was another intern like me. We became instant friends on the day we met in the office. We share a lot of similarities, like our love for 2PM, so maybe that's one of the reasons why we clicked. ♥ Since we're both interns for Sir Rain and ate LA, we basically share the work load. Sometimes she has thesis so she's not in during Thursdays, while I have class on other days. Despite the end of our OJT hours, though, I'm pretty sure I'll be seeing this girl a lot once we're free from our academic requirements!

I'm also very grateful for the awesome team that makes meg magazine possible every month! Ate Grace, Ate Klara, Ate Ning, and Ate Zanti have been super kind to me throughout my stay. Aside from the pleasant smiles, they would always ask me if I'm tired or okay, like whenever I work overtime, or during my first day at the March 2012 cover shoot - that was exhausting but not overwhelming or unpleasant because I had fun. I look up to them a lot because they handle so much stress with all the deadlines, yet they produce such pretty and colorful outputs.

Lea Yosalina, meg's beauty assistant, and Ekai Magtoto, the editorial coordinator, are so friendly too! I get to talk to them more often because I think we're almost the same age. Lea is not only a great make-up artist, she is very nice and sociable. Whenever I see her, either she's busy on the phone or a shoot, or on her desktop doing work on beauty products. Although I was not able to work with her a lot in my stay, I really admire what she does.

Ekai is probably the sweetest person I have ever met. She is such a bright and warm-hearted soul. I remember how during my first day at work, we were both seated at the back of the car on the way to the shoot location. Even though we just met that day, she told me about being in meg was her dream job. I knew right then and there that she would be a good friend. Aside from being approachable and friendly, she's a talented writer too! Check out her wonderful blog here. ☺
pretty Ekai is pretty
Another person that I will definitely not forget is Sir Rain Dagala. He is the fabulous fashion editor of meg and also the older brother of my friend from DLSU, Renz. I've been directly assisting him with the shoots, returns, and pull-out requests since my first day of work. He's also very very encouraging and outspoken. He and his super reliable assistant, Ega Rivera, give me tips or techniques to survive in the industry, and even a bit of advice on love. haha.

never a dull moment with him
There's also ate LA, the fashion assistant of meg magazine, whom I will miss terribly! She's one of the people that I have spent time with the most. She's funny and interesting to talk to, especially when she's with Sir Rain - together they make the best fashion team. She worries about getting wrinkles from work stress, but I think she's incredibly gorgeous. She's a jane-of-all-trades, an all-around person; aside from being a stylist and writer/blogger, she's also an events host and a theater actress.

I really don't want to think that I'm leaving such an awesome group of people, but I have to focus on my studies (especially my thesis!). The 70 hours and 20 minutes that I have spent working as an intern for meg were priceless, and I have gained so much. Now I can really say that I have lived my Devil-Wears-Prada dream. It was truly a privilege to be a part of such a great group of people, helping out behind the scenes - or rather, pages, of a fashion magazine. ☺

had to finally surrender my ID at the end of the day

My Life, Uninterrupted

Sunday, February 26, 2012

Hey all! I have been thinking a lot about blogging lately. I haven't been taking it seriously in the past, but for some reason, I am inspired to write about my life now. Hence, I have started this blog: She Walks in Beauty, inspired by my favorite poem by Lord Byron. Here's the poem, in case some of you might be interested in reading it:
She Walks in Beauty

She walks in beauty, like the night
Of cloudless climes and starry skies;
And all that's best of dark and bright
Meet in her aspect and her eyes:
Thus mellow'd to that tender light
Which heaven to gaudy day denies.
One shade the more, one ray the less,
Had half impair'd the nameless grace
Which waves in every raven tress,
Or softly lightens o'er her face;
Where thoughts serenely sweet express
How pure, how dear their dwelling place.
And on that cheek, and o'er that brow,
So soft, so calm, yet eloquent,
The smiles that win, the tints that glow,
But tell of days in goodness spent,
A mind at peace with all below,
A heart whose love is innocent!

The poem sounds so nice and musical, like a song. The lady being described in the poem is greatly admired by the persona. The use of contrasts (brightness and darkness) to describe her shows that her beauty brings these things together in perfect proportion. People are drawn to her not only because of her amiable appearance; her flawless features mirror her inner beauty as well. In the same way, I aspire to be a person who would exude beauty and love to others around me. My life may not be the perfect example of brilliance and loveliness, but I want to grow and lead a life that will.

I want to live my life, glorifying God and doing what I love best at the same time. I'm a girl that may seem quiet and shy, but happy and determined to succeed. Often times when all attention is turned to me, I get so embarrassed that I blush beet red or even cry. I may lack confidence in certain aspects, but I don't want to feel small or discouraged by things of the world. I feel that I want to express my thoughts through words more, and that is why I decided to create this blog. I want to really take some time for this - to record and share my thoughts on little things that are important to me. I may not be very outspoken and expressive when it comes to my personal confrontations, but through words I can be who I want to be. Without any limitations or hindrances, here is my life. ☺
